Last month’s Call Sign reported how ComCab had organised a luncheon at Rules Restaurant in Covent Garden to help celebrate Dial-a-Cab’s 50th anniversary as a radio taxi organisation. The Harrow based company presented Brian Rice with a beautiful cut glass inscribed bowl.
However, one person who had been invited but couldn’t come was Brian Rice’s predecessor as Chairman, Aubrey Siteman.
"I would loved to have gone," Aubrey told Call Sign, "but it came on the same day as my 75th birthday and my family had organised a party – and that was that! However, I must add my pride in being involved with ODRTS since 1963 and seeing how well the Society is doing and continues to do."
For those who don’t know, Aubrey had been a licensed taxi driver since 1953 and came to ODRTS ten years later when Eli Solomons was just handing the Chairmanship over to Jack Russell. Three years later he successfully stood for the BoM using the need for computerisation as his ‘election ticket.’ He became Treasurer for the first time in 1968. Barring one short period, Aubrey kept his place on the BoM until 1984 when he decided to stand down.
In 1989, he stood again and was again re-elected - 22 years after his first election success.
Between 1992 and 1996 Aubrey was the Chairman of Dial-a-Cab, but eventually stood aside and continued on the Board in several different positions and is still proud of the fact that he has - at one time or another - filled every BoM position within the Society.
   A belated happy birthday, Aubrey…

There could only be one star of this year’s Taxi Driver of the Year Charity Ball, Dial-a-Cab driver Howard Kott (B74). On Saturday November 15 at Grosvenor Square’s Marriott Hotel, the first-ever hat-trick winner of the title in consecutive years proudly accepted his prizes from long-time sponsors Dunlop. In addition to the cup, Howard won £2000, plus £300 from Dial-a-Cab as the highest placed contestant (you can’t get higher than number 1) and a set of tyres from Dunlop, which Howard generously donated to the tombola helping to raise even more funds for the Charity.
Call Sign asked Howard about whether he fancied trying for a fourth win. He was still undecided, but at this point felt that he’d rather help on the organising side and retire as the undefeated champion!
Brian Rice told us that DaC – one of the evening’s sponsors - were always happy to sponsor a worthwhile cause and were delighted to be involved in such an enjoyable evening. Dial-a-Cab were the only radio circuit present at the sold-out event.
During his speech, the Hon Chairman of the Taxi Driver of the Year Charity, DaC’s Russell Poluck MBE (T55) spoke of the problems that haunted this year’s competition, but assured all present that next year’s competition would return better than ever.
In the meantime, our congratulations go to Howard Kott…
