Dial-a-Cab telephonist and the south of England's top lady skeet shooter,
Donna Merry, failed in the most heart-wrenching way to fulfil her dream of
winning selection for the English senior squad and to become the first lady
shooter to ever accomplish that achievement. Following the first leg of the two-legged English team selection shoot, Donna was in 8th place needing to finish in the top ten overall to achieve her dream. She had captained the English Ladies team to success all over Europe, but the senior team was another level and contained the best shooters from around the country - but no woman had ever played for them and Donna desperately wanted to be the first. The event attracted the country's finest shooters and it was always going to be tough. Donna opened with a 99 out of 100, good enough to keep her up there in an automatic selection spot. Then she shot a 97... "That just wasn't good enough," Donna told Call Sign, "when you're up against the best players in the country, you can't afford an off-shoot. I |

was really upset that all my efforts over the two shoots werewasted by that one poor round." Even with that round, she still finished equal to rising star Adrian Jeffries - who had never been this close to selection either - in joint 10th place. A shoot-off was called for between Donna and Adrian with the winner securing an England shirt for the year. "I knew that I was unlikely to shoot as badly as I had just done, so I still fancied my chances of beating Adrian..." said Donna. But it wasn't to be. Adrian Jeffries picked that moment to shoot the |
round of his life and scored a perfect 25. Donna dropped one target
and so ended the competition in 11th place. Donna now has the British Championships to aim for, followed closely by the Dial-a-Cab European Championships at Northampton on August 10 when Donna, along with John Wells (K68) and Bob Raymen (D98J) will be battling to bring the European title to Brunswick House. All DaC drivers and staff and their families will be more than welcome. Admission is free and there is a licensed bar on-site. Directions are elsewhere in this issue. |
