There can't be many drivers on Dial-a-Cab who don't know about the
situation with the Upper Street bus lane in Islington. It is said that some
600 licensed taxi drivers have been caught on camera driving through the
final section of the lane which excludes any mention of taxis and found
themselves photographed and facing an £80 fine (reduced by half if paid on
time). A substantial number of drivers on DaC have told Call sign how upset they are at being excluded from the bus lane at the point when it is at its widest and easiest to get through. One driver, Tony Connell (Y73) has even told Call sign that they will have to take him to prison before he pays them a penny of his two fines (June 6 and June 13). He is currently awaiting the appeals procedure. He told Call Sign: "I refuse to pay a single penny of these two fines and in fact I am still using the lane. Why should my passengers have to suffer? Bus companies are all privately owned nowadays, just as we are, so why pick on our passengers? I timed myself recently when leaving the lane and persevering with the Liverpool Road lights.
