Jim Warren Mugged
Following a brief mention in Tom Whitbread's column in the February issue that our former security officer, Jim Warren, had been mugged, Call Sign has been inundated with requests from subscribers who remember Jim fondly from his many years at Brunswick House, asking if he was ok. So we paid Jim a visit...
Sitting in his lounge with Joan, his wife of 55 years, Jim told Call Sign of that Monday in late January after he had taken his regular weekly walk to the post office to collect his pension. He noticed nothing unusual and reached home uneventfully, but as he turned to go into his downstairs flat, he was grabbed round the neck very tightly by a young, black youth who then rifled through Jim's pocket, pulled his pension out, pushed Jim away forcibly and then ran off with his money for the week.

"Fortunately I managed to keep my balance when he pushed me," said Jim, "so I wasn't really physically hurt. But I did feel shocked that something like this could happen right outside my front door. It was around nine months ago that Joan was also mugged, so perhaps we've had our share now and we can get some peace!"
Jim manned the nighttime security desk at DaC for many years

before changing over to the daytime shift.
He always said that he loved working at Brunswick House...
"They were such a nice crowd," Jim told Call Sign.
Jim also has a very famous brother in boxing promoter Frank Warren.
However, Jim was no slouch either in the fame game having his own sports program - mainly boxing - in the Channel Islands on the local ITV station Channel TV.
He used to fly out weekly to Jersey, do the program and fly back in time to resume his security shift at Brunswick House! While on screen, Jim did many major TV interviews with the world's top boxers via satellite link-ups.
"I loved boxing and I loved working at Dial a Cab, so there was never a problem," said Jim with a shrug.
Nice to see you feeling ok, Jim...

 DIAL-A-CAB FOOTBAL

The October 2001 issue of Call Sign contained the remarkable story of Dial-a-Cab's 5-a-side football team who, said to be the best team by far in the City Lunchtime League and who had just won the Champions Cup, suddenly went to pieces during what looked like being their second consecutive drubbing.
Against a middle of the table team, DaC were refused a blatant penalty decision by a rather weak official who was then surrounded by our players. Within the melee, Captain Lee Morland was shown the red card for "unbecoming conduct" followed quickly by Paul Richards who jumped in to speak up for his captain! DaC were then down to three players - Joe Brazil (K16), Warren Barbieri (K19) and Paul Roma (G70). Lee came back and led the team off the pitch. That was the last time DaC played in that league - probably to the relief of all the other teams!
Recently, a team of solicitors and clerks challenged DaC from Jeffrey Green Russell, whose

regular ad you can see on page 17. They advertise a "no win - no fee" scheme and we assumed that this applied to legal situations and not football matches!
The match, played on a full sized pitch in Fulham at South Park, was a full 40 minutes each way 11-a-side match - something most of our team hadn't done for some time. However, you would never have guessed any of that as the Daccers raced into a 5 - 1 lead by half time, including a well-taken hat trick from
Gabriel  Sam-Yorke (K53). However, the goal of the match belonged to the
Call Centre's Max Foghere with a stunning thirty-yarder that went into the goal like a bullet! Team
Captain Joe Brazil also scored a good goal before going off injured.
The second half changed slightly because we "lent" JGR our top goalscorer Trevor Smith (V78) - provided he played in defence! He did - superbly and they suddenly became more difficult to break down. The match ended with a DaC victory by 7 goals to 5. Captain Joe Brazil told Call Sign:  "We were knackered by the end but hung on well. I think we'll be looking for some more 11-a-side games."
JGR captain Daryl Robinson said after the game that the best team on the day had won but that five of their players had been previously injured. "Try us again when they're fit!"
It looks like the DaC football team are back...
