Dial-a-Cab's founder-Chairman, Bonnie Martyn, has been asked and accepted the position of Life President at the University of the Third Age, which is aimed at retired people aged 55 and over.

At the University's next AGM in March, Bonnie will relinquish the Chairmanship that he has held since 1994 to step up and become the University North West branch's first Life President.
Bonnie, who celebrates his 93rd birthday next May, explained to Call Sign that the Chairman's position was full-time...
"I have to admit that since my two operations earlier this year, I have found full-time work rather hard going, so the move up to Life President will cut me down to just a few days a week."

Bonnie went on to explain what the University was about. "The first age is your youth," said Bonnie, "with your working life being the second. The rest of your life is the 'third age' and it can hopefully last just as long as the second, so you need something to be able to pass the time! We run many classes that retired folk can take. I personally run a Current Affairs class, but

there are many other classes from Music to Languages to Philosophy!"
As current Chairman, Bonnie is also the Chief Administrator, working five days a week in addition to taking his own class and attending his selection of  classes. Then there is the small matter of looking after 33 other tutors taking 33 classes!
As Life President, much of his work will now be done via the telephone - something that Bonnie knows a bit about following those early ODRTS days at Pentonville Road when anyone who was available would take the incoming calls asking for cabs. "I remember those days very well," said Bonnie displaying a very obvious pride in his voice.
Bonnie handed his Badge and Bill back to the PCO in 1996 at the tender age of 88: "I didn't have the time to drive any more - I was far too busy elsewhere," said this amazing man!
Bonnie Martyn became this Society's founder Chairman, when on November 12th 1953 at

Bonnie Martyn being presented with a plaque in July 2000 to celebrate former Chairman of DaC

Tenterden Drive NW4, the first  meeting of an ODRTS Committee pronounced this circuit 'open for business'. That means that in just 22 months from now, this Society will celebrate it's 50th anniversary and you just know that if the event is celebrated, the first person on the dance floor will be the-then 95 year old Bonnie Martyn and his lovely wife Carol. The only question is whether it will be a cha-cha or jive!

RETURN OF TAXI LICENCE PLATES TO THE PCO

When the Public Carriage Office was part of the Metropolitan Police, Service proprietors could hand taxi licence plates into police stations for onward transmission to the PCO. Since our transfer to Transport for London in July 2000, this arrangement has no longer been available.
The Metropolitan Police Service have asked us to advise the trade of this change as police stations are continuing to have licence plates handed into them.
Proprietors are asked to ensure that all plates due to be returned to the PCO are either returned in person to Technical Reception at the Public Carriage Office during office hours or posted through the PCO letterbox at other times. In future, no plates should be handed into police stations.
