Many of you will have read about the assault on Stan Carter (M95) in Call Sign last year. To make sure the chances of it happening again are dramatically reduced, Raywood Europe - the world's leading in-vehicle camera surveillance company - are kindly presenting and fitting the Raywood SnapShot RDC 2010 into Stan's taxi free of charge...

The Raywood SnapShot is now available to all drivers (see the ad in this issue) - although only Stan gets it free! Raywood are determined to bring the benefits of their industry-leading surveillance camera system to all Dial-a-Cab drivers. With its proven world-wide track record, this system is known to act as a powerful deterrent to the mindless attacks that plague the taxi community. Drivers and their families can now have some peace of mind that there is a system that will provide high quality evidence should an attack take place.
LP Motors at Dunbridge Street E2, well known and respected by the cab trade for many years, is where you take your cab for the two hour fitting program. DaC driver and current Taxi Driver of the Year, Howard Kott B74) is one of the two fitters, together with former Wolf fitter Paul Neech.

With over 25 years experience in the taxi industry, Raywood Europe were the first manufacturer to achieve PCO approval with their SnapShot 2010 Surveillance System installed in a London Taxi. It is approved for the Fairway and TX1/TXII. The RDC-2010 provides an in-vehicle deterrent against any would-be attackers, providing the taxi industry with a solution to the ever-increasing concern of driver safety, which Call Sign highlighted following several attacks.
The Raywood SnapShot camera with its integrated infrared lighting, fits above the rear-view mirror and is able to take photographs of the entire vehicle interior using a specially selected wide-angle lens no matter how dark inside the taxi. Its small size means that

it is discreet while providing a visible deterrent to any would-be assailant.
A total of up to 350 monochrome images can be stored in a custom designed, DSP controlled, solid-state memory unit. The combination of an infrared camera, special light filters and auxiliary lighting allows clear images to be taken day or night; when passengers enter the vehicle; the meter is turned on; during the journey and again as the passengers exit. To ensure that as much of the inside of the vehicle as possible is covered, Raywood are fitting two cameras in licensed taxis.
The driver also has the ability to activate the camera on a manual basis to take further images as required and if necessary can also activate an alarm causing the camera to take an accelerated sequence of images. Once the memory has filled in normal operation, it simply overwrites the oldest images as it continues to store new ones. The driver's manual intervention to take an image causes the immediate previous 30 images to be locked into the memory so that they are not overwritten, however the rest of the memory remains accessible.
Being a solid-state storage device means that there are no moving parts, no wear and no maintenance. The SnapShot has a high resolution, 465 x 420 and with up to 350 stored images is capable of holding more images than any of its competitors. The pictures are of the highest quality within the constraints of the technology and cost and SnapShot are proud that none of their photos have ever been
rejected by a Court due to lack of clarity.
Each image is stamped with the date, time and vehicle registration details. The data is encrypted to eliminate tampering. Images are stored securely and can be retrieved from the memory only by using Raywood's proprietary Windows based software application. The driver does not have immediate access to images to preserve the privacy of passengers. In the event of an incident, he/she must take his memory module to an approved Download Centre (in our case, the PCO).
The on-board battery backup will maintain the integrity of the images in memory for up to 10 days if the system is disconnected from the vehicle's battery.
