2001 JRTA Golf winner: 2001
Champions Football Cup winner: 2001 Silver medal winner in The British
Open Skeet Shooting Championships. What could be left for Dial-a-Cab in
2001...?
Although the turnout was a little disappointing, that probably had as
much to do with the absence of the Taxi Driver of the Year Show's usual
popular venue of Battersea Park. However, Call Sign has been told that in
all probability, the Show will return to Battersea in 2002. The site at
Planit Arches, Bethnal Green wasn't bad, being in close proximity to
Petticoat Lane Market and giving those who came, the chance of spending an
enjoyable day wandering around the Show and the fascinating City of
London.
As Call Sign expected, the winner was a Dial-a-Cab driver!
The new Taxi Driver of the Year for 2001 is Howard Kott (B74) and speaking
to Call Sign after the Show, King Howard told us that he was delighted to
have won the title after so many years of trying. His prizes were £2000
from the long-time sponsors Dunlop, together with a set of their new tyres.
He also won £300 from Dial-a-Cab as our highest placed driver and a years
free meter rental from Taxitronic.
"It is a great feeling to have won," said
Howard, "and you

can only come first, but it would be nice to see some
new faces entering the Show next time. If it is at Battersea Park
again, perhaps that will encourage more drivers to give it a go.
After all, it isn't just the winner who cops all the loot, the prize list
goes right down to 10th. I know little about advertising, but if we could
encourage just 10% of all licensed taxi drivers to go along with their
wives, partners and kids, then you have a huge crowd."
Howard went on to add: "If they enjoy it, they will
return the following year and recommend it to others. Sarcastic comments
such as those in TAXI Newspaper are totally negative and do little to
help. What we need are some genuine suggestions passed on to the Committee
and we could have a great day out next year."
Before going to polish his cup (again), Howard asked Call
Sign to pass on his thanks to Dunlop, whose continued sponsorship of the
Show goes far beyond using it as an advert for themselves.
