At an extraordinary press conference held in Coventry, London Taxis International revealed the years best kept secret; the TX1 was to get a new engine to replace their successful Nissan 2.7. LTI announced the new link-up with Ford Motor Company before unveiling the star of the show, the Ford diesel engine which will power future TX1's from 2002.
The introduction of the Ford 2.4 DuraTorq diesel engine in the TX1 will also easily meet Euro III emissions legislation and will be the first stage of the exciting new co-operation between LTI and Ford. It is the culmination of a developing relationship between the two manufacturers in recent years and is viewed by LTI senior management as a milestone for the company.
Rumours have long been going round taxi shelters regarding a new engine for the TX1 and LTI have never hidden the fact that they are constantly evaluating new engines from a variety of manufacturers, but now following extensive testing, the company have unanimously agreed upon the Ford DuraTorq as the number one choice for the TX1's requirements.
The engine already successfully operates in the award winning Ford Transit (voted International Van of the Year 2001 in Brussels in January) and the new Ford Mondeo. In fact, a Call Sign representative at the Geneva International Car Show held earlier this year, told us that the Ford DuraTorq diesel engine was unanimously voted the star of the show ahead of any shiny new car model!
Ford told Call Sign that they are totally committed to developing its diesel engine strategy and advanced  technology and as a sign of their

LTI ANNOUNCE NEW LINK-UP WITH FORD

The new Ford Duratorq 2.4 litre direct injection engine

commitment to it, have recently announced an increase in production from 650,000 to 900,000 units per annum by 2004. LTI's relationship with Ford provides the company with full access to the motor giant's impressive design, development and testing facilities throughout Europe.
LTI's Managing Director of Operations Peter Shillcock, formerly with BMW so he knows a good engine when he sees one, told Call Sign:
"This exciting announcement of our co-operation with Ford and the future introduction of the Ford DuraTorq engine is the first stage in a new working relationship. We are building foundations upon which we will be developing our future joint strategy for taxi emissions and advanced transmission systems in conjunction with our new partners. We are entering a new era for the TX1 through this exciting opportunity for

LTI, Ford and indeed our customers. We are now involved with one of the world's largest and most prestigious automotive manufacturers and are confident that the combination of a true British Icon with Ford's engineering excellence will create an exciting product for our customers."
Senior Directors at Ford Europe also expressed their commitment to this unique collaboration with LTI and their shared vision of the future. FE Chairman Nick Scheele told Call Sign that he was delighted that LTI had decided to install the Ford DuraTorq engine in the TX1.
"It is a fantastic engine," he said, "this really is a case of two world beaters getting together - the engine from the new Transit recently named  International Van of the Year, married to the award winning and world renowned TX1 taxicab. For Ford, it is particularly gratifying as it strengthens our links to Coventry, the original home of the British motor industry and I wish every success to this LTI/Ford link-up."
According to Ford Vehicle Line Director Rod Hammonds, they operated a fleet trial of high mileage users during hot-cold, stop-start arduous driving conditions. He told Call Sign:
"We are happy that this engine will have the sort of durability that our customers rightfully expect."

CALL SIGN LOOKS AT LONDON'S GUILDS AND LIVERIES
DYERS
The Dyers were incorporated to establish a 'Fraternity of perpetual Guild in London and the suburbs, to the praise, glory and honour of Almighty God and of the most glorious Virgin Mary' and 'To oversee, rule and govern' the trade of dyeing!
The first charter was dated 1471 with the ninth - and last - 1704. The company has the privilege of a royalty of a game of swans on the Thames, shared only with the Monarch and the Vintners, whose records first make mention of the Dyers' royalty in 1609. Around this time it was ruled that dyers, free of other companies, had to swear the oath for true dyeing although they were not forced to bind their apprentices at Dyers Hall.
Sir Cuthbert Hackett served as Lord Mayor in 1626 after he was translated, as was then customary, to the Drapers' Company (see April's Call Sign).
It is supposed that the original hall was in Anchor Lane in around 1480, the next two being at the Three Stars further east along Upper Thames Street, with three more halls being on the present site at 10 Dowgate Hill. The present hall was built in 1840 and contains many items of interest including an illuminated window designed by Laurence Whistler, paintings, furniture, plate and panelling; the 1578 ordinances show the arms of the company, which date from before 1530.
The Company's colours are white and black...

FARMERS
With the spread of foot and mouth ruining the lives of many farmers, a quick look at the Farmer's Company seems relevant and while rumours often claim that there is no such thing as a poor farmer, many are now finding themselves with deep financial troubles.
Prior to becoming the Farmer's Company, it was known as the Company of Agriculturists, but it was only after the war in 1946 and as a result of their war effort, that the Company was actually formed. The livery was granted and presented on October 31st 1952, with the charter following almost three years later on July 29th 1955. By 1965 the permitted livery was 300.
The Company was formed to stimulate the development of agricultural education and interest in rural arts and crafts and has initiated advanced course in farm management. The grant of livery stipulates that the majority of the court must be persons engaged in the farming industry and the livery includes many prominent and titled landowners. The Company shares their City premises with the Fletchers at 3 Cross Street EC1.
