I'm currently in the process of moving house yet again and there are always
things you want to know about areas prior to moving there; so here are some useful web
sites... One of the obvious questions on my mind was: "What's the possibility of flooding in my new area?" As usual, the Internet plays a big part in answering my question with a quick trip to the Environment Agency's web site: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ . I visited the EA's web site quite some time ago and I'm sure they've given it a good revamp; the site is easy on the eye and easily navigable. I found the flood pages immediately at: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood/index.htm but I'm afraid all I ever got was a message stating that their server was busy! If you've had more luck than me, please let me know. Apparently the page will return details of flood probability in your postal code. Whilst at the EA site, I viewed some of their other interesting pages, such as waste: Did you know that over 200 million tons of waste is land filled every year? Also pollution, water conservation, environment education, research and development, etc. Well worth a visit for those who care about their environment. A necessity when relocating to another area is finding out the best schools and this information is available at the Department for Education's web site: http://www.dfee.gov.uk/perform.shtml Here you can search by area or by specific school, for any college or school in the UK - another site well worth book-marking. One site I found extremely useful was http://www.upmystreet.co.uk . It uses the postcode to identify a whole plethora of useful information such as the best energy provider, the average price of houses, the nearest takeaways, the nearest Tescos, the full profile of inhabitants, even the closest schools to your postcode with the results from the recent exams and number of pupils! Excellent site, check it out and bookmark it. |
Recently there has been a lot of
speculation concerning the new Top Level Domains (TLDs) that will be released in the second quarter of this year, more info can be obtained at: http://www.icann.org/tlds/ Please be very wary of any emails you receive stating that you can reserve certain domains - you can't! The seven new TLDs are: .aero (air transport industry), .biz (businesses), .coop (non-profit cooperatives), .info (unrestricted use), .museum (museums), .name (for registration by individuals) and .pro (accountants, lawyers, physicians). Yes, there will be a scramble for these domains, but judging by the slow uptake of the .ws TLD, I suspect everyone will still opt for .com or .co.uk as their primary domain, whilst registering the newer TLDs as forwarders.
