Under a starlit Texas sky, proud Donna returns to
collect a bronze medal. Betty McCumber took Gold, while a tearful Mary
DeFrancisco took Silver.
Dial-a-Cab's shooting Call Taker and Captain of the England Ladies Team,
Donna Merry, went to the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) World
Championships in San Antonio, Texas as a total unknown in the world of Skeet
Shooting:
"But they know me now," said a thrilled Donna
as she returned home with one Silver medal, two Bronzes and a Plaque for
winning her class! And she should have won a fourth medal - a Bronze -
cruelly taken away through an admin cock-up!
In addition, DaC dispatcher and a former Taxi Driver of the
Year, John Wells (K68), returned back to Brunswick House brandishing a
Silver medal, which he claimed with Donna when they teamed up for the
doubles.
Donna's medal collection involved bronze both in the main World
Championships and the 'Mini' World in the Ladies 410, together with the
Silver in the Doubles with John in the main 410 Championships.
The 410 is considered to be the hardest category to win with
the
Donna also won her 'Class' outright (worked on averages) and picked up a Plaque against a huge entry. In the Doubles, Donna and John Wells scores added together sent them to Silver and second best in the world in that class - an amazing achievement.
John Wells told Call Sign: "I'm delighted to have won a Silver in the World Championships, but Donna's achievements are just magical. Almost as important as winning is the fact that she has now made her mark in the USA. They had always believed that no one outside of the US could even shoot straight let alone take a medal. Every American shooter of note now knows the name of Donna Merry - and even better, she shoots in a Dial-a-Cab top!"
Also speaking to Call Sign on her return to the UK, Donna said that she was thrilled to have had such a great Championship.
"I've never competed at that level before, but now I'm determined to go back next year and to have a crack at a Gold medal."
