Heading into the
JRTA Annual Golf tournament held at Westerham Golf Club in Kent on a
winning streak of five consecutive years and with two last minute
withdrawals, the odds seemed to be against Dial-a-Cab making it six years
off the trot. That they achieved it says much for the amazing DaC team
spirit and will to win. The day started cloudy with the occasional ray of sun. Following breakfast, we held a nine-hole team Stapleford game for each circuit. The Dial-a-Cab winning team were Martyn Madden (Y97), Lewis Shirlin (R13), Keith Gilliagan (S18) and Brian Desborough (K39). For the first time ever in the JRTA Golf Day, a hole-in-one was scored. Congratulations to Mario Aguis of Radio Taxis (London). After lunch, the individual Stapleford got underway just as the weather deteriorated dramatically. Despite the rain, players continued to play for the credibility of their circuit. Being unbeaten for five years placed even more pressure on the Dial-a-Cab team. As the first five-team returned, the scores showed Dial-a-Cab leading ComCab by 3 points and DataCab, who had started very poorly, had to make up 36 points on the leaders. With three teams left to finish, the excitement was mounting. Dial-a-Cab had 316 points, ComCab had pulled one point back and RTL had reduced Dial-a-Cab's lead to 4 points. Data Cab couldn't reproduce last year's form despite one player scoring 37 points. The light was fading fast by 7 pm and from the clubhouse we could see the third from last group tee off. Their whole round had been played in heavy rain, but their determination was clear for all to see. The last group were on the 18th green at 7.40 pm with the scores showing Dial-a-Cab in front of RTL by 7 points. With the high handicappers playing in the last group, their finishing scores could amount to any number of points. RTL's last player in had dropped 7 points over his nearest rival so it was still an anxious moment for all. |

By the time dinner was served at
8pm, the last group were having a well-earned shower. The scores of the
last group were 22, 22,22 & 25 to RTL driver Joe Saunders, but his
score was not enough to stop the Dial-a-Cab team taking the winners podium
for a record sixth straight time. It finished: Dial-a-Cab 393, RTL 389, ComCab 382 and DataCab 370. The staff trophy this year went to Barry Hooper and Graham Lambert of ComCab who beat the Dial-a-Cab staff team of Allan Evans and Ernie Fitch by 5 points. 'Longest Drive' went to Barry Rowan of ComCab. Nigel Peacock of DataCab landed 2ft 3ins from the pin to win the 'Nearest the Pin' prize. Richard Newell of DataCab, who has a handicap of 12, collected the booby prize for scoring 16 points, the least number scored for the day. He obviously is a fine weather golfer! |
Dial-a-Cab's team consisted of
seven drivers who had never been selected before which goes to show the
golfing quality the circuit has. Congratulations on a brilliant
performance and we can't help wondering whether we should have the trophy
framed, as it never seems to leave Brunswick House without returning on
the same day! Keith Cain Alan Evans (Staff) 20 28 |
