COMPUTER CHINCHAT

From Vince Chin

In July, a friend asked whether I'd be interested in knocking together a quick web site to promote his intended charitable trip to China. Now I consider myself to be a charitable person, well sometimes at least, but when someone says "knock together a quick web site", I get worried.
His intention is to travel together with his friend from London to China and back by motorbike, publicising his journey by visiting Internet Cafes en-route sending me his travel log and images. Check out http://www.orientexpress.ws to view his journey, but please bear in mind it is a freebie and won't be an all-singing and all-dancing web site, but it is at least functional.

Free Internet Calls???
Did anyone join Lineone.net and take advantage of their offer that supplies free Internet calls from Quip? There was a massive advertising campaign with http://www.Quip.co.uk pushing their free Internet calls service.
Like a mug I fell for it and sent my £20 to obtain their box that plugs into my BT phoneline. That was over three months ago, I've now given up using both my Lineone dial-up together with the £20 box. In my opinion, it was a total rip-off which I also told their help-line, who were very polite but never seemed to be able to correct my problems even when I told them exactly what the problem was at their end.
Ah, well, never mind, their 'scam' has since been publicised in the national press and they've agreed that they never anticipated the demand for free calls.

Can you smell something there? Don't they call it bull****!
So it seems the music industry are combining their efforts to close down Napster's web site, as mentioned in my last article. For those that missed it, Napster is a web site and application that joins thousands of browsers over the Internet, providing the ability to swap audio files. The recent court case in the United States went in favour of the music industry and Napster was told that their site must close down. They are appealing and we wait with baited breath because this could have far reaching implications for the freedom of transmitting data over the net.
But in the meantime, get online at either http://www.napster.com or http://www.scour.com  whilst it lasts.

My £1,000,000 Earning Web Site!
My million pound earning web site is still in the prototyping phase. Basically we're just too busy earning a living to spare the time to actually sit down and develop the site, but we're still optimistic...
Just a quick mention to let you know that my discussion lists, discuss@taxicab.co.uk and taxicab@taxicab.co.uk have both shut down, although theknowledge@taxicab.co.uk is still alive for those on The Knowledge. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and I'll keep you informed if someone else decides to take on the responsibly of providing free, uncensored debate for our trade (see Editorial).

Dial-a-Cab Credit Union
Roy Taylor
I had intended telling you about the Dial-a-Cab Credit Union booklet, which should have been delivered through your door last month with the copy of Call Sign. I was going to tell you how much the booklet would make up for the awful summer that we are experiencing. But quite frankly, everything suddenly seems so absolutely trivial. To say I feel totally numb wouldn't do justification to the word following the shock news that Roy Taylor had died.
Roy was one of the founder members of the DACCU and for several years, was a hard-working member of the Loans Committee. He was also one of the nicest men I have ever met. The thoughts of everyone involved with the Credit Union go out to Joan and the family.
A number of existing members have returned the membership application on behalf of their partners (which is contained in the new booklet along with a standing order mandate if required). I trust the rest of you are waiting until you return from holiday to apply.
One question has arisen, which is in connection with frequency of saving/loan repayments. If you are a driver, deductions can be made from your credit sheet whether it's weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Staff can have their credit union deductions made in line with their salary payments. Standing orders, of course, can be made weekly, monthly, etc.
You may or may not be aware that we are currently experiencing difficulties regarding office cover (due to ill health) and we would be grateful for your co-operation during this period. Please enquire by telephone before travelling a long distance to the office to ensure that someone is there (see below).
Also, please do not go to Drivers' Reception or Drivers' Services at Brunswick House with DaC Credit Union matters. I know the staff there are helpful, but they are unable to assist with any Credit Union queries.

Be lucky...

A MESSAGE FROM MIKE SON

As the Board Member responsible for outside publicity at DaC, I would like to apologise for the lack of information in London Taxi Times regarding Dial-a-Cab's participation at this year's Taxi Driver of the Year Show.
As you probably know, Radio Taxis London (aka Mountview) owns London Taxi Times, and the management of that organisation has forbidden any mention of Dial-a-Cab in their paper. The fact that the TDOTY Show is a charity event seems to be of little consequence in that decision.

Mike Son
