After years of increased workloads with the same cab numbers...

In 1989, Dial-a-Cab led the world of taxi radio communications when launching it's MDI Data Dispatch terminal. Aside from a big taxi company in Texas and one in Canada, no one could hold a candle to our new system. We had shot through the field to become the UK's number one radio taxi company using a new system that suddenly allowed us to take as much work as we wanted. Previously, we had a voice system that curtailed expansion through the sheer inability of the human voice to speak any quicker and still be understood. Over the "voice" years, some dispatchers became famous for their ability to pump out work at an amazing rate of knots. Guys like DaC's Dennis Samuels and Manny Conway and possibly the king of dispatchers, Mountview's Derek Diamond.
All these and more became almost legends through their vocal ability, but none could come close to data dispatch.
Eleven years on and the same MDI terminals were still in use and working far better that anyone could possibly have dreamed would

be possible in 1989. The only problem was that the terminal ceased production many years go and the only people left who still had any sets which could have allowed us to expand using the old system, were another London taxi organisation who, seeing our success in 1989, went to the same suppliers and said: "We'll have whatever you gave them!"
They upgraded their system last year but one has to assume that  they refused to allow their old sets to come to a taxi company who were in opposition the themselves. That's business...
That being the case, Dial-a-Cab had to bring in new equipment. We all know that the new equipment we now have was
designed in-house with software that was also designed in-house and for the first time in many years, we can now get as many new in-cab mobiles as we want.
The result is that DaC are now about to advertise in the trade press for new drivers - something many long term drivers have never seen before!
The increase will be by approximately 100 mobiles a month and priority will be given to those whose normal work patterns include the times when coverage is at its slowest.
If you have a friend that you know would make a good DaC radio man, give Shelagh Adkins his details and he could be on Dial-a-Cab soon.
Dial-a-Cab Citizens Wanted
The August issue of Call Sign explained about Dial-a-Cab driver Phil Stern's (B98) plea for your help. He has organised a very special event that he hopes will once again raise funds for MND -remember Bob Woodford (P49) running across the Sahara Desert in order to help the charity?
On Thursday April 19th 2001 at the famous Circus Tavern in Essex, Phil and YOU will be dazzling the public with the latest in fashion wear.
There will be evening, sports and casual wear, all sponsored by Marks & Spencer, but the difference is that the models will be connected with the cab trade - both men and women - and mainly DaC drivers, office staff and dare we even suggest Board Members? Their roles would be as very well turned-out models exhibiting the coolest and sleekest garments of the moment.
Phil wants volunteers with a sense of fun. He has all he needs from the DaC office staff and would
like some lady and gentlemen drivers now. You can be of all sizes and shapes as the clothes will be for real people - no stick-insect supermodels here!
The evening will provide much-needed funds for MND, but will also provide an evening of entertainment for you.
In addition to the fashion show, there will be a Circus Tavern meal, disco and cabaret! All you will be asked to do if you aren't one of the models is to buy a ticket and come along for a fun evening.
If you are interested in being a model for the night, please send your name, call sign and contact number to Call Sign or you can try to catch Phil direct on 0956 967 463.
And you can help even more. Do you know a celebrity who might be able to attend and would do so purely for the sake of the charity? If so let Phil or Call Sign know.
Further details will be available soon...
