Call Sign at the Cab Trade Charities |

On Tuesday September 26th, Call Sign was present at an historic event;
the first joint charity taxi outing in living memory was about to take
place. The feeling at the official meeting place outside Blackheath Park was certainly rather strange with the three charities all parked separately. Representatives of the three - The Albany, The War Disabled and the Underprivileged Children's Fund - all spoke to Call Sign saying that while there was some apprehension because they were all used to doing things in their own way, they felt privileged to have gone so far and to do what the trade's political organisations had constantly failed to do, and that was to work together. The amazing figures tell an astonishing story that, regardless of any problems caused by their different modes of organising events, the three charities did the London taxi trade proud. They amassed a total of 160 taxis carrying a total of 735 passengers made up of mentally handicapped children, war disabled soldiers, underprivileged children, helpers, charity organisers and two members of the trade press - Taxi Globe's Phil Phillips and Alan Fisher from Call Sign. In addition there was a coach-load of Chelsea Pensioners. And then they all went to the Dome totally free of any charge. Marks and Sparks provided packed lunches for all and the Dome's staff did all they could to help everyone enjoy the day. Kids will enjoy anything that involves playing and there was much for them to see, do and play with, while soldiers are famous for enjoying anywhere that has a bar - and the Dome has several...! Congratulations to everyone involved - especially Steve Sanders who co-ordinated much of the proceedings leading up to the big day. There are many Dial-a-Cab drivers involved in the organisational side of the three charities and to name them all would be to detract from any we inadvertently missed out, so from Call Sign, well done to everyone involved... |
