DO YOU KNOW OF HERBERT SMITH - THE LAST HANSOM CAB DRIVER…?

These early Unics have LH Registrations.  Could it be one of these?

great-grandfather’s registration number and he believes that it began LH followed by four digits. Unfortunately the copied details have been mislaid while the originals were buried with him!
   Robin told Call Sign:
“My great grandfather was born in 1858/59 and got married in 1881 to Harriett Herrett. They had seven children and lived in York Road, Islington for the first part of their married life and then the trail goes cold (Editor’s note: That may be York Way). He retired in 1831 and at sometime during WW2 his home was bombed and he moved to Willesden to live with one of his daughters, (married name Rodgers).
My own father always insisted that Herbert was the last hansom cab driver in London, we believe he owned the business himself but do not know the scale, only that his son-in-law worked for him and met his future wife - Herbert's daughter - at that time.”
If you can help Robin, please contact Call Sign and we will pass on any relevant info…

Robin Smith lives in Derby and has been trying to get any information about his late great-grandfather, Herbert Smith who was a Hansom cab driver in London between the years of 1883 and 1931 – possibly the last one. He contacted Merle Peirce in Rhode Island, USA who not only heads an International section of the London Vintage Taxi Association (LVTA) but who also reads Call Sign regularly on the Internet! He sent Robin to us for any help Call Sign readers can provide.
Robin’s only source so far has

been his great grandfather’s obituary in the Willesden Chronicle dated Jan 27th 1950 under the heading: “Oldest cabman dies at 91.”
It goes on to report: “Willesden’s oldest cabman, Herbert Smith of 7 Eric Road Church Road, Willesden, has died aged 91. Mr Smith started driving hansom cabs in 1883 in Swiss Cottage and Kilburn. When taxicabs started to take the business from hansom cabs, he learned to drive a taxi  and retired when he was 72.”
Robin actually had a note of his

With the season rapidly drawing to a close, the situation at the top of the Five-a-Side City Lunchtime League is hotting up.
On March 30th DaC played the team who were immediately above us, Broadgate Celtics and walloped them by 9 goals to 3. Dial-a-Cab’s top scorer, Trevor Smith (V78) kopped yet another five goals while Paul Richards – now a Dutch television star as well –

scored a couple with Joe Brazil and Gabriel Sam-Yorke grabbing one a-piece.
The B-I-G game came seven days later when the huge lunchtime crowd witnessed the mammoth top-of-the-table clash between DaC and the top team CWB. The mighty tussle ended all square with both sides scoring three times. For DaC, Dave Adelman scored a rare goal along with Paul Richards and Gabriel Sam-Yorke who knocked one in from the penalty spot.
Those two games in hand should give us the maximum six points – the question is: will the season end too soon…?
