Paul Bishop (R64), John Dixon (B67), Phil Stern (B98J) and Bob Woodford (P49) ran marathons around the world in aid of the baby life support charity BLISS...

By John Dixon (B67)

With regards to our campaign some eighteen months ago to which Call Sign gave us so much help by publishing barometer of funds collected towards our Dual Challenge, it is apparent to me that there wasn't any reply from ourselves to the appeal.
The reason for the 'complacency' was the unexpectedly sad death of our fellow runner Paul Bishop. However, the money collected through the appeal and some more raised by an event partly organised by myself and Bob Woodford (P49), meant that we had enough money raised to get BLISS to make a presentation in Paul's name - on their behalf - of a cerebral scanner to Greenwich District Hospital.  Due to red tape

L-R Suzanne Dobson (BLISS) two members of Greenwich Hospital, John Dixon, Bernie Bishop (Bob's Wife) hospital administrator and in the front a mother with her baby that had been helped by the machine.

CALL SIGN READERS HELP BLISS PROVIDE BABY SCANNER FOR GREENWICH DISTRICT HOSPITAL

in the shape of delivery times, time taken for training staff and then waiting till Greenwich Hospital were ready  to let the presentation go ahead, it meant a wait of almost a year. Finally last November the presentation was made.
This amazing piece of equipment measures any distress in the brain before it actually appears as a symptom, so they can treat it before it has a chance to get hold of the baby's body.
Can I also thank everyone - both drivers and staff - who put their names to my sponsorship form in reception for this years marathon in aid of the Disney outing to Paris. At this moment, it seems that I will be undertaking another four marathons this year. I may do them for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) as Bob Woodford and Phil Stern (B98J) have established a connection.

Call Sign usually deals with DaC drivers, but as we also have a young person's page, DaC driver's wife Leigh Briden has insisted that wives should have a say as well. So this is the first of...

'ER INDOORS'
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A DAC DRIVER'S WIFE

Hello to you all...
Yes, you guessed it! Us wives simply won't let you guys have any peace, so there is no point trying to hide, you just cannot escape 'ER INDOORS!
May I take this opportunity to introduce myself; my name is Leigh Briden and I am a Dial-a-Cab driver's wife - or should I say widow? I think my husband should remain nameless, that way I can blackmail him later with juicy threats of exposure!
Me? I am a 34-year-young mother of five children (yes! 5 children, my child benefit is delivered by Securicor!) and I am awaiting a formal diagnosis for what my doctor believes is multiple sclerosis. Well that's the introductions out of the way, now for the gossip...
How was your month? Mine was traumatic to say the least. With my beloved step-fathers death and funeral, teenage tantrums and two stray dogs being brought back to an otherwise dog-free home, I think my children were hinting at something but I can't quite put my finger on what. Though I do have this vague feeling that they may be travelling around kidnapping dogs in a vain attempt to get us to invest in a pet.
People always ask me how I cope with my all too hectic life and the answer is always the same. You have to have something to look forward to and mine at the moment is taking my 14 year old son to see Kevin and Perry Go Large, (not that he knows it yet!). Mind you, he had better have his body

Leigh Briden

armour on after all my digging in his ribs with "That's you, that is!" and "You're just like that!" He may need to attend the local accident and emergency afterwards with Kevinperryitus!
I will let you know what I thought of the film, which I will gauge by how sore my son's ribs are.

And Taxis...?
The taxi trade has bought many changes into our lives, but the one I wouldn't change for the world are the stories my husband brings home. They have brought us many laughs and occasionally tears, especially the one when my husband had boxing world champion Prince Naseem in his taxi. He asked Prince if he would like the door opened for him, or did he wish to somersault through the window!
Taxi drivers; what are they like eh!

P.S. To all those lady taxi-drivers out there, I really would like a little support. My husband suspiciously offered to post the letter containing this column and my photo. When I declined, I later discovered that he was going to swap my photo for one of Melinda Messenger. BOOOO!!!!!
DON'T EVEN GO THERE GUYS!!!!!!!!!
