LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
ODRTS News Magazine 1967

Chester Terrace, NW1

Dear Sir,
With regard to your credit details, I have only two points to make. One is that since my usual journey with ODRTS from home to the office or vice versa usually costs four shillings or four and six with light traffic, an automatic gratuity of two shillings seems excessive.
The second is that it is the experience of both my wife and myself that individual owner drivers often charge less than the percentage you advertise above the meter rate for journey's exceeding six miles.
Another point, apart from your credit system which is very good, is that your business card uses the word 'reliability'. However, you cannot guarantee this, especially as I believe that you still do not call for taxis until ten minutes before the cab is due.
I deduce from this that you are trying to have it both ways. I

would rather have a taxi on my doorstep five minutes early than five minutes late.
Twice this week, my wife Barbara had ordered a taxi and had to start walking as it hadn't arrived. On one of those occasions, she was picked up by a taxi not in your group, the driver having picked up the signal and gone towards the area of my address.
A good credit system is no use without the taxis to back it up.
   Yours sincerely
Bernard Braden

BONNIE MARTIN -
BERMUDA BOUND!

Our old friend Bonnie Martyn won't be seen around for at least 12 months. He has resigned as Chairman of the Owner Drivers' Radio Taxi Service (a suitable presentation is being made to him) and he has agreed to go to the island in the sun of Bermuda to take over a radio taxi company and to introduce two-way radio about which, you remember, he knows quite something.
He has been busy supervising the installation of Pye 'Reporter' sets into 12 Austin A55's which he is taking with him to be used as taxis in Bermuda.
His drive and initiative were soon recognised in London when in 1952, ODRTS was founded and he was made Chairman and he is largely responsible for the sound position of that organisation. We understand that many foreign
visitors have seen this service in operation and Bonnie has been able to advise many prospective users.
Mr and Mrs Martin leave for Bermuda via New York in the Queen Mary on December 28 and the London cab trade will join us in wishing them God-speed.

SECRETARY'S REPORT (E.Ives) 1967

I must take this opportunity on behalf of all the administration staff to express our sorrow on the passing of Board of Management member Mr Bernie Lyons (B45). I cannot reconcile myself to the fact that I shall never see him again. Both as a Board member and dispatcher, he was always excellent.
It always appeared to me that his first remark was: "Well Mr Ives, what's the situation, to which my reply would be: "Desperate!" Back would come his resounding response: "Well keep up the good work" or carry on."
That we shall never hear those words from his lips again is tragic. In memory of Mr Lyons, the BoM have decided that the call sign of Black 45 will be permanently withdrawn and not be re-allocated. The Board are also to launch an appeal in his memory.

E.Eves
Secretary
