The following
is an adaptation of the minutes of first ODRTS 'Committee meeting' held
on November 12th 1953
THE FIRST EVER ODRTS CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
We are responsible to a lot of owner drivers, several business houses
and the GPO and we must therefore conduct all our future dealings in a
proper manner.
I wish to congratulate all members of this Committee for
their wholehearted support and work in the past and say that I feel
confident that they are capable of fulfilling the work before us.
We have now heard from the GPO at Dial House, Shaftesbury Avenue to the
effect that two pair of land lines from 172 Pentonville Road N1 to Heath
Mansions in Hampstead are available at £78 per annum inclusive. The GPO
have also notified us to say that the number allocated to as for our
Hiring Service is Terminus 6444 and we will have 20 lines. This is
acceptable to us.
Marconi Ltd at the Aldwych have told us that they had not
yet decided whether they can supply equipment on hire-rental agreement,
but will communicate again within 14 days.
There is good news from Jack Rose & Co, the estate
agents with whom we are dealing with for 172 Pentonville Road and a copy
of a letter addressed to their solicitors, Messrs Arnold, dealing with
the tenancy has been passed onto us. In this connection, ODRTS Secretary
Mr Naismith reported having inspected the premises with the surveyor,
H.A.Scrase & Partner of Great James Street WC1, and estimates for
preliminary decorations have been asked for.
Our hoped-for new premises at 172 Pentonville Road will be
taken on a 14 years, full repairing lease. The Surveyor's report
estimates approximately £200 per year repairs and maintenance will be
needed.
We have had correspondence from Danor Engineering Ltd who
are based next door to the new property at 170 Pentonville Road. Their
estimates for electrical installation has been accepted and we have
asked them to proceed, although Mr Naismith was instructed to tell the
contractors not to proceed with the installation of light fittings,
which are to be left in abeyance pending other estimates.
As for the electricity supply itself, we have signed up
with the London Electricity Board at 35 - 39 Old Street and will be
operating on the 'Business All-in' tariff.
Visit To Pye Telecommunications Of Cambridge
Messrs Pye have promised us full supply and fitting of
equipment and have promised us the first 50 |
radio sets within 4 weeks of the 9th November 1953. A meeting has
been arranged for the 17th November at 172 Pentonville Road to discuss
base station layouts etc.
Five new applications for membership have been
considered this week and have all been accepted as suitable. We have
decided that the Rule Book and a copy of the agreement should be sent to
all members of the Society immediately. Mr Naismith, has been instructed
to send a letter to the Public Carriage Office, also enclosing a copy of
the Rule Book. We have also drafted an 'Application for Approval' to the
Public Carriage Office.
I am calling for a meeting of all drivers interested in
co-operative radio on Tuesday 17th November and a suitable invitation
letter has been drafted. We have provisionally booked by telephone, the
Albany Tavern at 4 Great Portland Street for 7.15 pm.
We are now we are a fully registered society and it is
important that we on the Committee of Management know exactly what our
separate functions are so as to prevent overlapping. Beneath is a list
of who will be responsible for what.
Bonnie Martyn, Chairman
The above was agreed by the following: Hon Secretary Mr D.Naismith,
Public Relations Officer Mr A.Cobden, Technical Matters Mr E.Stoffel,
Premises Managers Mr A.Hall, Mr F.Duncan and Mr A.Cutmore.
