Dial-a-Cab's Tony Sam-Yorke (W95) has one of the most amazing stories that
Call Sign has ever told. He has been cured of Diabetes - a condition that has
no cure! Yet a cure has come from an ancient Chinese herbal remedy passed down
through the generations of the family of Dr Hung Li... Hung Li is a qualified medical officer in China in addition to being the director of a Chinese hospital. He is now based in London specialising in Chinese herbal medicine. When Tony first discovered that he had become diabetic, his very worst fears materialised. Firstly he would now have to inject himself several times a day with Insulin in order to stay alive. Secondly, he would now lose his livelihood as the PCO were acting on an EEC directive, which forbade Type 1 diabetics from following their occupation as PSV and lorry drivers. Diabetics have to inject themselves because their pancreas no longer works and cannot provide the Insulin that the body needs in order to regulate its blood sugar level. Diabetics on Type 2 (Diabetes controlled by diet/tablets) do not automatically lose their licence and are treated on their merits. Over the past year, following several court actions and much publicity from Call Sign, the PCO have changed their policy and say that they are treating each case separately. They are allowing some Insulin dependent diabetics to regain their licence following the most stringent medical by the driver's medical representative and a confirmation from the PCO's specialist, Mr Taylor. However, the process is taking well over one year as both sides must be certain of the drivers reactions following Diabetes and this can only come through testing. CHINESE HERBS AND DIABETES: |

![]() immediately suspended. I was ill and out of work. When I was released from hospital, I did well. I stuck rigidly to a careful diet and together with my Insulin 'jabs'; I managed to keep my blood sugar levels to within a reasonably normal range and again started to feel quite well. I decided to take the Public Carriage Office to court to try and get my taxi licence back. Although the consultant I had was very good and said that he'd be prepared to state that in his view, I was now perfectly fit to drive, the law moves slowly and I was going mad waiting for a court date. In the meantime, I was working at the Heathrow Taxi Desks but desperately wanted to drive a cab again and to return to Dial-a-Cab as plain old W95. Then fate took a hand. I was walking through the High Street and saw a Chinese herbalist. I had never tried it before and didn't really believe that it could help me, but in my position I thought I'd try it. What harm could it do? So I went in... Doctor Li Tells Me I Can Be Cured... |
it would also have put both him and I in an awful position
regarding any court proceedings. I also decided not to tell my wife Linda,
because I know she wouldn't have approved. After all, being a Diabetic is not
the end of the world even if it means losing your job. Insulin now allows
Diabetics to live normal lives and Linda would have wanted me as a Diabetic and
alive rather than what the possibilities could have been. After four months, I had reduced the Insulin supply out of existance and boy, was I frightened! I still hadn't told Linda and she was starting to get suspicious. I could feel her eyes following me around! She realised that I wasn't giving myself the Insulin injections, but couldn't understand why I looked so well. After I explained to Linda, I had to confess all to my consultant. I made an appointment to see him and he asked me if there were any problems. When I told him that I was no longer on Insulin because of the say-so of a Chinese herbalist, he went the doctor's equivalent of totally spare! He carried out a series of tests including blood, urine and others and announced himself to be totally baffled. He had, he told me, never seen anything like it. To all intents and purposes, I was now cured, yet there was no cure for Diabetes. Speaking to Diabetes UK, a support group for those with Diabetes, the London Evening Standard were told that they had never heard of any 'cure' such as this. Explaining that there were several possible reasons in theory - such as a temporary stop of the pancreas - Diabetes UK went on to add that all the theoretical reasons would have been highly improbable in practice as they would have all been checked out. All they could say was that they were mystified and intrigued but warned any Insulin user Diabetics not to come off their medication. I can't explain it either. They tell me that I may just be a one-in-million case. I don't know what it is; a miracle, an amazing herbal cure or whatever. But my belief is that without Dr Li I would still be a diabetic and certainly not a licensed taxi driver." This may well be one of the most astonishing medical stories Call Sign has come across, but we must add that we are not advocating any Insulin dependent diabetics to rush around to their local Chinese herbalist and to stop taking their Insulin. Tony's case must be looked into at the very highest level, but it is not advisable to act independently of medical advice. |
