DIAL-A-CAB SOFTWARE

New Mobiles (Terminals)
It looks like the installation and rollout of the new mobiles is finally at hand. Dial-a-Cab has spent a lot of time investigating and testing all available options for this first-of-its-kind implementation. The time has been well spent. The mobiles are receiving rave reviews from pilot drivers, onlookers and even the competition!

Credit for the success of the new mobiles must be given to all those Dial-a-Cab people who have worked so hard to make their mobiles the best in the world.
I want to personally thank the Chairman, Brian Rice, for his foresight, persistence and leadership throughout this project. Many problems and issues were encountered in the evolution of the mobiles. Failure to achieve the dream often seemed more likely than success, but Brian was always optimistic, always diplomatic and always went the extra mile to eliminate compromise from the plan.

   Tom Whitbread gave a great

amount of time and effort to the early, and often most frustrating, stage of the mobiles. His work with the vendors can only be described as relentless and thorough. Tom's common sense and his knowledge of the radio system and taxi operations contributed greatly to the foundation of the new mobiles.
Peter Thurston at DaC's Roman Way depot played an invaluable role in testing the new mobiles. His expertise and knowledge saved many a doomed day. He always seemed to know the right thing to do and often proved more capable of trouble-shooting and problem solving than the engineers from the various suppliers who participated in the trials of the new mobiles! Now if we can just get him to stop using his laptop as a dinner tray! Kidding aside, Peter has done an excellent job and we commend him for his contribution.

And the Drivers
The drivers who tested the prototypes played a major role throughout the trials. They expertly reported problems and contributed many ideas to enhance the mobile. I know they wanted to make the new mobiles the best they could be and

everyone is indebted to their efforts. They offered to do more than I asked of them and they gave more than I expected. The only thing they didn't do was to complain!
I'd like to name those drivers and again offer our thanks. They are:
H.Sales (A11), M.Tarbuck (L41), D.Dacas (P76), A.Gorman (W77), P.Tully (Y40) and A.Evans (Y83).
Our apologies to anyone we have failed to mention.
Having participated in the implementation of the original mobiles in 1987 and having witnessed the loss of drivers and customers during that implementation, I say that the lack of complaints about, and enthusiasm for the new mobiles, is the biggest compliment the players in this project could receive.
We thank you all...
Tom and Debbie Carter

LOGO WINNER REG CASHES IN

Reg Carpenter

The DaC June logo winner Reg Carpenter (B3) started driving a cab in 1967 and joined DaC while we were at Shirland Road. He had one break when he left to work on the street: "I couldn't stand the arguing over false positions when we were on voice" said Reg. "I also had a short stint on Com Cab, but I couldn't take to it."
Reg has had logos on his cab ever since he bought it and is quite frank in admitting that at first he thought that "...they were a waste of time!" However, and fortunately for Call Sign, Reg went on to add that they soon grew on him and now he feels that they enhance the look of the cab.
"Mind you," said Reg now in full flow, "...warts grow on you as well! Tom Whitbread won't read this, will he?" With Call Sign now rather confused as to whether that was really a yes or no, Reg admitted that he really did like the logos now!
Reg is married to Joan and they have two grown-up children, Dawn (married to a DaC driver) and Trevor. They also have six grandchildren "...so there won't be too much left over for me," he said laughing!
Well done Reg...
